Reports to: Clinical Nurse Manager
Summary: The BHS/BHT is a member of the interdisciplinary team who assists in total client care through implementation of appropriate therapeutic approaches and related nursing functions within the therapeutic environment.
The BHS/BHT is responsible for carrying out assigned functions according to the philosophy, goals and objectives of the hospital and unit program.
Requirements: BA or BS Degree in a related mental health field is preferred. Associate Degree or two years of college from a four year university is required. One (1) year in a mental health setting preferred. Must be able to demonstrate and effective communication skills, have a proven ability to work with patients, and demonstrate good judgment with decision-making. Must value and support hospital goals, objectives and treatment philosophy.
- Facilitates a therapeutic and safe milieu by appropriate interaction with clients, facilitating groups, structuring down time, and ensuring the proper level of resident supervision is maintained.
- Assumes responsibility for completing assigned duties and paperwork without reminders.
- Adheres to confidentiality statement to preserve confidentiality.
- Intervenes therapeutically to suicidal gesture, assault behavior, elopement attempts or inappropriate behavior and communicates intervention to Nurse (R.N.) and Program Coordinator.
- Adheres to policy and procedure for outings/activities to maintain safety.
- Assists the proper handling of emergencies of the unit and hospital (i.e., fire, security, and medical).
- Understands the DCFS Licensing Standards for Childcare Institutions and ensures compliance with them.
- Documents unusual incidents concerning assigned clients and communicates to Nurse (R.N.) and Program Coordinator.
- Assists with client admission: checks belongings, labels and inventories valuables, and follows policy related to storage and disposition.
- Completes assignments as posted independently without reminders.
- Prioritizing based on individual client acuity and needs.
- Participates in planning and organizing the daily activities of the unit program.
- Assists with orienting new personnel, as assigned.
